About the University

The University of Debrecen is a public university in Hungary, founded in 1538 in Debrecen and reorganized in 1912. Today, the University of Debrecen is among the top five Hungarian institutions designated as a "research university," and in 2014/2015, it was included in the ranking of the best global universities in the field of medicine. The University of Debrecen is a member of the International Association of European Universities.

The University of Debrecen has gained wide recognition not only in Europe but also internationally for its active research activities and strong specializations. The university has a particularly good reputation in the fields of medicine (molecular biology and pharmaceuticals) and information technology (computer science and programming). Students also often choose to study at the University of Debrecen's Faculty of Tourism, which has received high marks in several rankings.

Fundamental research is conducted by the university's staff in the following areas: computational science and materials science, molecular medicine, and computer engineering. The University of Derzeben has 12 research groups (involving 28 members of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences), 21 doctoral schools, and several research laboratories on campus.

Admission requirements

To obtain a bachelor's degree at the University of Debrecen, applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. To enroll in a master's program, applicants must have a diploma of at least a bachelor's degree and its transcript. Documents must be translated into English or Hungarian (with full correspondence of grades and course transcripts) and notarized.

Study at the University of Debrecen can be conducted in Hungarian or English, at both the master's and bachelor's levels. If applicants choose Hungarian as their language of instruction, they must pass a university-appointed exam. If applicants do not speak Hungarian but still wish to study in it, the University of Debrecen offers a fee-based preparatory course lasting one academic year. If they choose an English-taught program, applicants must prove their proficiency by providing a standardized test score—IELTS (bachelor's: 5.5/master's: 6.0) or TOEFL (bachelor's: 59, master's: 70).

Admission to the University of Debrecen is not possible without a motivation letter and academic resume (including details of academic interests and previous education), as well as a letter of recommendation from a faculty member or school director. After submitting your documents to the Admissions Committee, you will take an entrance examination consisting of a test and interview.

When submitting your application, you must pay an application fee of USD 146.
Classes at the University of Debrecen begin in September, so applications must be submitted by March 31. Applications are reviewed from March 31 until the end of August.

Tuition fee

Tuition at the University of Debrecen is fee-based (including tuition in Hungarian, although it is somewhat cheaper than tuition in English). The cost depends on the popularity of the individual department. For example, the medical department is considered the most prestigious, with tuition fees of $17,336. Other undergraduate and graduate programs range from $5,959 to $9,751 per year.

The University of Debrecen has several dormitories. Apartment accommodation costs up to $325 per month, plus expenses for food (approximately $325), transportation (from $11 per month), course materials (from $433 to $650 per year), and personal expenses.

A stipend, awarded by the University of Debrecen to its most academically successful students, can partially cover living expenses. The stipend amount is no more than $325 per month. Students can receive the stipend for up to three years during their studies.

The university is located in the northern part of the small city of Debrecen, near the Hungarian border with Romania and Ukraine. The two campuses of the University of Debrecen are located almost in the very center of the city, opposite a large, sunny park. The old building houses the engineering, medical, and humanities faculties, as well as a lush botanical garden. The new building of the University of Debrecen houses the Faculty of Economics and Law and a large university library.

Furthermore, the University of Debrecen offers its students comfortable dormitories located in a park-like setting near the city center. Students can also enjoy a variety of cinemas, concert halls, sports centers, and cafes located near the campuses and student dormitories.

The University of Debrecen Library is the second largest repository of scholarly books and works in the country (containing at least 600,000 volumes).

Over the entire period of the university's existence, financial assistance from the state and commercial organizations has amounted to approximately 17 million euros, which testifies to the excellent technical equipment of the laboratories and classrooms of the University of Debrecen.
